Website

www.hutchmath.com This web site contains PDF copies of the syllabus, schedule, test review problems, notes, and videos. From the web site, click on MATH 126E. No password is needed. Note: you can also access my homepage by opening a web browser and enter “Eric Hutchinson” and CSN in the search box. To find out more about your instructor, you can click on MY BIO. There is also a link to the tutoring center on the main web site. NOTE: We will NOT be using Canvas in this course other than for communication.

Software

We will be using MyOpenMath ( MyOpenMath Website ). This is a free online learning management system in which you will do all your homework. This site will also contain your gradebook. (See registration instructions at the end of the syllabus). Also contained in MyOpenMath is the lecture notes, textbook link, and test review materials.

Calculator

This course requires a scientific calculator. The recommended calculator is the TI-30XS MultiView, which features MathPrint™ technology for displaying exact answers in fraction and radical form. Equivalent non-graphing scientific calculators with similar functionality are also acceptable. During the exams, calculators must be standalone handheld devices. The use of calculator applications on smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, or other mobile devices is not permitted on exams.

Course Description (MATH 126E)

This course is equivalent to MATH 126 and requires students to be concurrently enrolled in a co-requisite section of MATH 26. A rigorous discussion of algebra concepts necessary for calculus is the focal point of this course. Topics include an in-depth investigation of algebraic functions and their graphs and solutions of systems of equations. Note: This course serves as a prerequisite course for MATH 127 and is essential for students planning to take calculus. CSN offers this course only as a 6-credit combination course of MATH 126 (3 credits) and the MATH 26 (3 credits) corequisite course.

Course Description (MATH 26)

MATH 26 is just in time learning support for MATH 126/126E. Topics in MATH 26 include: Graphing Linear Equations in Two Variables; Perform operations with real numbers, exponents, and polynomials; Solve linear equations and inequalities; Write equations of lines given two points; Solve systems of equations; Work with functions and function notation; Graph functions; Factor polynomials; Work with rational expressions and solve rational expression equations; Perform arithmetic on irrational numbers and solve radical equations; Solve quadratic equations.

Bathroom Break During Exams

Only one person at a time is allowed to go to the bathroom during the exam. Before you go to the bathroom, you must put your cellphone on the desk in front of the classroom.

Attendance Policy

Attendance will be taken during the first two weeks of class, as per the new Course Registration and Withdrawal Policy (policy details given later in this syllabus). Students are responsible for all announcements, lecture material, and assignments, whether or not they attend class. Sometimes additional problems are covered in class outside of the lecture notes, depending on student questions. If you miss a class, lecture notes and videos can be obtained in MyOpenMath.

MATH 102B Pilot Course

This MATH 126E section is participating in a pilot program connected to MATH 102B, an eleven-week, credit-bearing course designed to provide additional support for students who are having difficulty with MATH 126E. The course focuses on strengthening foundational algebra and precalculus skills needed for success in college-level mathematics. During the first four weeks of the semester, student performance on an in-class placement test and early course assessments will be used to help identify students who may benefit from participating in MATH 102B. Students who are identified as good candidates will receive additional information about the course and the option to transition from MATH 126E to MATH 102B. MATH 102B is designed to provide students with an opportunity to strengthen their mathematical foundation and continue making progress toward their academic goals. Participation in the pilot does not mean that a student has failed MATH 126E; rather, it provides an alternative pathway for students who may benefit from additional time and support before continuing in the precalculus sequence.

Standard of Work

To receive full credit, you must show the mathematical steps and reasoning used to arrive at your answer—not just the final answer. Your work should be organized, legible, and easy to follow. Simply writing the correct final answer is often not enough to earn full credit. Credit is based on both the accuracy of your answer and the mathematical reasoning used to support it. Work that is incomplete, unclear, difficult to read, or inconsistent with the final answer may receive reduced credit.

Homework Extensions

Students are allowed up to 7 individual homework extensions during the semester. Please email me if you request a homework extension. NOTE: HW extensions cannot be applied to the review assignments.

Test Policies

Test redos are not allowed in this class. All tests count toward your course grade. The lowest test score will NOT be dropped.

Makeup Tests Policy

Makeup tests are allowed only for documented valid reasons such as illness or medical procedure, accident, family emergency, mandatory work trainings, death in the family, and active participation in scholarly or athletic events. Invalid excuses include technical difficulties, needing more time to study, or other tests during the same week. If an test is missed for a legitimate reason, an attempt must be made to contact me by the day of the test (preferably before the test is given) to let me know of your difficulty and provide necessary documentation. If you must miss a test due to a prearranged conflict (such as work conflicts), let me know about it so that we can arrange an alternate test date or extension. The instructor of record makes the final decision about all makeups. Once tests have been returned to the class, makeup tests will no longer be permitted.

Conduct/Responsibilities

All work must be your own. The use of AI tools, Photomath, or similar applications is prohibited. Students are expected to treat classmates and the instructor respectfully at all times. In the event that you find another student's words, actions, or demeanor to be frightening or offensive, please inform the instructor.

Technical Difficulties

You may experience technical difficulties related to computer connections or equipment during the term. This cannot be used as an excuse for failure to complete assignments. It is your responsibility to locate the computer hardware, software, and Internet connections necessary to stay connected and current with your course work. Technical difficulties are not accepted as excuses for missed work.

Syllabus Quiz

You will begin the course by completing a quiz in MyOpenMath covering the information and policies laid out in this syllabus. You must earn a perfect score on the Syllabus Quiz before any of the other assignments will be made available to you. If you do not get a perfect score, review your answers and this syllabus, and then retake the Syllabus Quiz. You will be given as many attempts as you need to achieve a perfect score. Any assignment missed due to a failure to take or achieve a perfect score on the Syllabus Quiz will be scored as a zero, no deadline will be extended, and no make-up work will be allowed. The Syllabus Quiz will count as one of your homework assignments. Please note that this assignment (in conjunction with registering in this course in MyOpenMath) will be used to verify student participation in the course. Students who do not complete this assignment by Tuesday, September 1st, will be dropped from the course, with tuition and fee liability per the Course Registration and Withdrawal CSN policy. Policy details are given later in this syllabus.

Homework

You will be responsible for submitting weekly online homework assignments. Each week there will be a group of homework section assignments due on Sunday nights at 11:59pm, unless otherwise noted on the homework schedule. All online homework assignments will be completed in MyOpenMath. Your first homework assignments are due Sunday, August 30th. Each week there are multiple sections of homework due, so you will want to start working immediately once the course begins. These homework assignments make up 20% of your overall grade. These homework assignments are not something you can finish in an afternoon. Because there are numerous problems, it is best to work in shorter study sessions throughout the week rather than trying to complete the assignments all at once. The MOM registration instructions (given at the end of this webpage) will explain how to access the homework.

Corequisite Quizzes

There will be two Corequisite Quizzes during the semester, one during the second week and one during the third week of the semester. These quizzes will be completed in person and on paper during class and will be based on the assigned homework and recently covered corequisite topics (see schedule for quiz dates). Completing the homework before each quiz is essential for success. Quizzes must be completed independently. You may use your notes from class and your written notes from your homework while taking the quizzes. All notes must be on paper; notes stored on a mobile device, tablet, computer, or other electronic device may not be used. Make-up quizzes will generally not be given except in documented cases of extenuating circumstances. Any approved make-up quiz will be subject to the same documentation requirements described in the Makeup Tests policy.

Tests

There will be four paper-and-pencil, closed-book tests administered in person during class (see schedule for test dates and the sections covered on each test). You are NOT allowed to use notes on any of the tests. Sample exams will be available in MyOpenMath to help you prepare for each test. Certain problems may provide a formula or other necessary information as part of the problem statement. You MAY NOT use your mobile device as a calculator during a test. All mobile devices must be turned off or on vibrate and must be put away during exams. The average of Tests 1, 2, 3, and 4 will make up 50% of your overall grade. Approved make-up tests will follow the course Makeup Tests Policy.

Final Exam

The final exam is a comprehensive, closed-book exam that will be administered in person during your regularly scheduled class period on Wednesday, December 9th. You MAY NOT use your mobile device as a calculator during the exam. The final exam is worth 25% of your overall grade. There are no redos for the final exam.

Test Review Assignments (Extra Credit)

For each of the four tests in this course and the final exam, there will be an optional Test Review Assignment available in MyOpenMath. These assignments are designed to help you study by giving you additional practice problems with different numbers and formats than those in the regular homework. If you score 100% on a review assignment, you will earn 5% extra credit added to your corresponding test score. If you complete only part of the assignment, the extra credit will be prorated based on your score. These review assignments are a great way to prepare for each test and boost your grade at the same time. Each test review assignment is due by 11:59pm PST on the day the test is given in class. No extensions will be given. Also, the three lowest homework scores from the whole semester will be dropped. Besides this, no other extra credit assignments will be offered.

Course Registration and Withdrawal Policy

Students, without previous arrangement with the instructor or department, who fail to attend the first two (2) class meetings of a course that meets multiple times per week or the first (1st) meeting of a class that meets one (1) time per week may be administratively withdrawn from the course. Non-attendance/non-participation for an online course shall be defined as failure to log onto CANVAS or other instructor-designated websites AND complete one educational activity such as a discussion post or assignment submission within one (1) week of the course start date without prior arrangements made with the instructor or department. A student may be administratively withdrawn from an online course(s) for non-participation or attendance per this policy. You are expected to complete your own work in this class. Using artificial intelligence to generate work, or claiming work done by others is plagiarism. Furthermore, cheating on exams or lab exercises is not fair to students who are honestly studying. Cheating is also subject to penalties, which can include getting a zero for the exam or lab exercise or failing the course. Any use of generative AI tools is strictly prohibited for all assignments, exams, and projects in this course. All work must be completed independently, without AI assistance at any stage, from initial planning to final submission. Suspected use of generative AI will be investigated as a violation of CSN’s Academic Integrity policy under the definition of 'cheating,' specifically ‘receiving aid not permitted by the instructor.’ Potential consequences may include a warning, grade reduction, course failure, or academic probation, depending on the severity of the violation.

Free tutoring and academic support services are available.Centers for Academic Success (CAS) provides quality DROP-IN academic assistance to all students enrolled in for-credit courses at CSN.
